Position:   Executive Director

Status:  Full-time, 37.5 hours per week

Schedule:   Monday through Friday with flexibility to work evenings and weekends as events or meetings dictate.

Reports to:   Board of Directors

Purpose: The Executive Director is responsible for the implementation of Board policies; recommending policies to the Board; acting as the liaison between the public and the Society Board; managing the collections; developing and presenting educational programs for the public and the schools; grant writing; developing and creating exhibits for the public; managing a volunteer workforce; overseeing the general operation of the museum campus buildings, and working closely with the Board to develop and implement fundraising plans for operations and special projects such as the project to move and restore the one-room Central School.

The job involves working closely with Board officers, directors and volunteers; requires professional knowledge of museum management, preservation, teamwork, leadership, and ability to work effectively with community leaders, groups, organizations and residents.

The position requires excellent computer skills, writing, public speaking and interpersonal skills.

Specific duties:

  •  Assists with fund raising events.

  • Attends Society events.

  • Attends continuing education seminars, workshops and conferences.

  • Attends and reports at monthly Board meetings.

  • Attends committee meetings when requested.

  • Attends community events and meetings such as Chamber events.

  • Attends Village board meetings when appropriate.

  • Catalogs acquisitions with assistance of volunteers.

  • Collects statistics and prepares reports when requested.

  • Develops and presents educational programs for the public and schools.

  • Develops and creates public exhibits for the museum and the public library.

  • Prepares annual report for distribution to the Village Board.

  • Prepares publicity including news releases, and fliers (in collaboration with the    Administrative Assistant).

  • Prepares recommendations for annual budget.

  • Recommends accessioning and de-accessioning of acquisitions.

  • Recommends policies to the Board.

  • Represents the Society in the community.

  • Researches and write grant proposals.

  • Researches responses to outside inquiries for information in local and museum resources.

  • Writes articles for local media and promotes local history.

  • Ensures proper storage of museum artifacts.

  • Monitors and ensures proper environmental controls for the collection.

  • Supervises volunteers.

  • Works closely with Board of Directors to develop and implement fundraising plan for operations and special projects such as the Central School renovation.

  • Work collaboratively with other Mount Prospect organizations.

  • Write policies and procedures for Board approval as appropriate.

  • Other duties as assigned

Education and Training

Bachelor Degree in history, museum studies or related field. Advanced degree preferred. Minimum two – five years experience. 

Computer proficiency required.
