100 S. School St. - St. Paul's Lutheran Church and School

In April of 1912, early residents of Mount Prospect met to discuss the founding of a Lutheran Church to meet the religious needs of the many German residents in the area.  Three months later, on July 7, 1912, 25 men organized St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.  Rev. J.E.A. Mueller became the first pastor of the Church shortly afterwards, a position which he held until 1957.

A church building was required to house the new congregation and on March 2, 1913,  St. Paul’s first church was dedicated.  It was located at Busse and Elm.  This served the congregation until April 13, 1961 when a modern church building was dedicated across the street from the sight of the original building.

The organization of St. Paul’s Church was closely followed by the beginning of St. Paul’s school.  After arriving as pastor of the Church, Rev. Mueller began teaching on January 20, 1913.  The original nine students met in a house on 31. S. Main Street until a one-room school house was built next to the church later that year.  Rev. Mueller taught at the school until 1917, when Martin J. Haas. became the first principle and teacher at the school.  He taught at the school until his retirement in 1968.

By 1921, the one-room school house could no longer house the growing enrollment at St. Paul’s.  Another one-room house was added to the original building through a small hallway.  This mismatch of buildings housed the school until 1928, when a new building was constructed.  Finally, in 1989, the old 1928 building was demolished to make way for the modern facility that now houses the school.
