S. Wapella – Salvatore DiMucci Jr. House
This one-story ranch
style house was built sometime in the early 1950s and reflects a typical style
of the period. It shows the push for housing in the 1950s, both in style, as
ranch houses were quicker and less expensive to built, and also in its most
famous resident, Salvatore DiMucci Jr.
Salvatore was born in
1934 and grew up to take over his father’s development business in Mount
Prospect. He was able to turn his father’s small business into a
large national company over
time through his hard, no-nonsense approach to business. Due to this, he was
responsible for a large amount of real estate building in Mount Prospect in the
1950s and 1960s. At one point he and his company owned and managed over 1,000
apartments in the town. Because of his large involvement in the town and his
attempts to keep constructing new properties, he often came into conflict with
the village officials. Many times he was involved in law suits with the town, both
suing and being sued. He was an infamous figure in Mount Prospect by his death
in 1997, however his strong influence on the built environment in Mount Prospect
cannot be denied.
